Some of the best songs in history had the fewest words written. Some of the best tunes came from the fewest notes. Some of the best athletes the world has ever seen produced only one special trait that carried them to those victories. Some of the best gold mines for profitable cash return success came from the smallest business model designs. Big is not always better. Better is always better. There is a difference.
If you carry inventory, make sure it is adequate but not heavy. If you market advertising, make sure it is effective not mass produced. If you create architecture, quality will always surpass quantity. Bigger is not always better. Know the difference.
People sting themselves when they try to build a business model on the premise that 'bigger is better.' I see many business models try this 'magical' move. Rarely does it work. The 'magic' of being big is not always the best 'magic' to apply. However, the 'magic' of becoming better always works. I prefer the one that always works. I like to win more than I prefer to lose. I like the odds that favor making my business model 'better' much more than I desire the increased risk to fail by becoming 'bigger.' One of the best ways to satisfy the desire to become bigger is to make sure your model is getting better. Better models are the ones getting bigger. Don't get big for the sake of getting bigger. Get big for the sake of getting better. Get better first, and the rest will follow. Eventually you will discover how big you have become. Better is always better.
If your work design systems are not doing what they should be doing, make them better. Find new ways to make better things happen. If your business process is not producing what you believe it should be producing, make that process work better. Go to work on improving how you do what you do. Get better at it.
If you have a home and you do not like how your landscape designs look, make them better. Improve the designs. If you have an exercise routine you do for your health and it is not producing the desired results, make that routine work better. Get a better routine. Better is always better. More is not always better. Bigger is less desirable if it produces less victories. In other words, focus on the results rather than the methods. We sometimes get caught up with 'cool' methods and forget to do the things that produce better results. We want to be 'big' and 'bad.' We want to be popular, in the know, recognized, visible, successful, wealthy, secure and admired. We want to be the things that we believe 'big' will deliver. Bigger houses, bigger investments, bigger business models and bigger recognition becomes our desire to attract and own. We want to parade around in bigger style. We believe that bigger is better. Not always is that true.
If I was to be honest about how I raised my three daughters, it was the better stuff in life that helped them become better people. It was never the bigger stuff that produced the better results in how they have become such great citizens with productive lives. 'Big' had nothing to do with it. 'Better' was always the key. Look back at your own patterns of life. The best stuff you remember came form the best stuff you did. Better was more successful in producing the better results. Being 'big' had nothing to do with it.
As I have mentioned before, I like coffee. A good cup is on my list of desires. You can fill up a 32 ounce cup with a lot of coffee and if it is a bad brew, it is all bad. Big is not better when I drink my coffee. Better is always better.
If you lead a large staff in your business model you can begin to develop a great company slogan. Try to mention this line when you see the opportunity to use it, "Better is always better." If someone you employ stops to share with you how they improved something in their work, respond by saying, "Better is always better...good job." Do not post signs around that host that slogan. Signs are not a better way to communicate. We all hate signs. We love personal touch. Get better with the personal touch. Remember, better is always better. Get rid of the signs. Improve the tongue.
I found the time yesterday to improve the areas where we store all of our 'outdoor' retail inventory. I even heard great comments from customers who passed by. Better is always better. We notice when things are looking better. We notice when things are produced better. We know when things are organized better. We know when customers are treated better. We know when products perform better. We know when employees are treated better. We know when children are treated better. We know when neighbors are acting better. We know when drivers are driving better. We know when companies are performing better. We know when children are acting better. We know when athletes are excelling better. We know when students are working better. We know when shipping is getting better. We know when business traffic is getting better. We know when sales are getting better. We know when better is getting better. Work to become part of the process for getting better. Make up your mind to do better. Better is always better.
Some concepts are so easy to see yet so hard to perform. I do not know why that is, but it is true. We can easily see how doing better will only lead to better results. Yet each day we struggle with making sure we perform better. We go right back to doing what we did yesterday. The same stuff in the same way. We do what we do because it is what we have always done. We do not hit the day like we must do a better job of managing today. We usually hit the day like we hit it yesterday. The same way in the same fashion. We know we need to do it better but we seem to be waiting for someone else to produce the better stuff. We seem to be waiting for someone else to get fired up about doing better. If someone else gets better at doing their stuff, we might try it for ourselves. If someone we admire does it, so should we. We will improve our diet, our exercise, our work, our language or our perspectives only if we are motivated enough to make them better. Otherwise, better is not on our list of daily goals. We know that better is always better...but it is not always placed on our daily list of goals.
Try working better. Try doing better stuff with your time. Try making the idea of doing better become a regular part of your daily routine. Listen to the words you speak. Are they better for where you want to be in your life? Are you choosing better words to speak? Are you circling better ideas to do? Are you improving how you deal with the pressures of life? Are you becoming better at managing challenges and obstacles? Are you getting better at this stuff? Are you trying to get better at this stuff? Try working better.
I found that I discovered why I was not getting better at what I needed to do. I did not get better because I was always examining how others were not getting better. I noticed that the more I noticed how they did not get better at what they did, I got worse at what I was doing. I figured out that if I was going to get better at what I was doing, I did not need to wait for them to get better at what they were doing. I could get better all by myself. Think about this stuff. You can get better all by yourself. You do not need to wait for someone else to do it first. If other drivers on the road do not get better at driving responsibly, at least you can. You can get better at driving all by yourself. You do not need them to improve before you decide to improve. That fact holds just as well for courtesy. Just because someone else has not decided to get better at courtesy, does not mean you need to wait to get better at it. You can become courteous all by yourself. You are a big person now. You are all grown up. You can get better at courtesy all by yourself. You do not need someone to hold your hand at becoming better. You can do it all by yourself.
It is amazing, isn't it? How we think is how we act. We can become better at what we do but we only do it if someone else motivates us to do it. It is so easy to see it but so much harder to do it. We seem to be waiting for someone else to beat us at getting better. I am not sure I know how you can win that game? Like I said earlier, I like winning. I want to get better before they do. Better is always better.
Until next time...
