Who Has The Keys To Your Business?

If you plan on skipping this post because you do not operate a brick and mortar business, just hold on for a minute.  Every business has a set of keys, even those businesses online.
Business Keys Help To Motivate

In fact, not recognizing that your business has keys may be part of the problem if you are not growing your online business.

In a brick and mortar environment having a set of keys to operate the business makes it certain that the business is alive and needs attention.  Everybody needs an alligator.  To a brick and mortar business owner the keys in their pocket provide an excellent alligator for them to tend to their business requirements.  If they do not get up and go open up their business box in the morning they do not generate any revenue.  Customers will begin to call and wonder why they are not open.  A lot of trouble will occur if the owner misplaces the set of keys that opens their business box.  Those keys become a pretty nifty alligator...a pretty nifty force of motivation.

Keys come in all shapes and colors.  Some are silver and some are gold.  Online business owners do not need a set of golden keys to open their doors...instead, they have ideas.  That may be part of the problem if you are not growing your online business.  If you are running low on ideas today you may not open your business to go to work.  You may actually slough the day away and allow the Internet to do the work for you.  You operate with a separate set of rules.  You do not have any keys to your business that require you to go and open your doors of work.  You are just as human as any one of us and you will opt out of doing your work if the opportunity presented itself enough times.  No keys needed, no motivation to go open up.

Consider the lack of owning keys a dangerous option.  Who has the keys to your online business?  Who have you allowed to run your business?

Brick and mortar business owners get up each morning, reach over to the wooden counter top and grab the keys to their business box.  Once they open their business box they can now go to work on performing the many behind the scenes demands every business requires.  Every business model has a set of requirements that need special attention every day.  When an owner skips a day of performing those requirements the business suffers by getting behind on its duties.  Trust me, everybody needs an alligator somewhere.  At some point in our business life we grow to hate that stuff.  Yet it still needs to be done.  Good thing we have the keys!  Many times I have given good thought to skip out and play hookie at my business.  I could not because I had the keys to open up.

Once there I started to do the work I was trying to avoid.  I did one little duty, then another and before I knew it, it was time to close up and go home.  It was a good thing I had the keys to my business on my counter at home.  It made a difference in helping me to overcome my desire to skip out.  I can admit there has been many times when my keys have saved me from skipping my work.  My keys on the counter have the same effect as an alligator does when it is chasing me for its lunch.  I hurry up and get going.
We All Need Alligators!

To any business owner of an online business, what do you use to create your own alligator of motivation?

If you have not put in place some form of alligator mechanisms to help you overcome the desire to skip out for the day, you are missing a very serious and KEY component to your business success.  You may not recognize this truth as being too significant to address.  You may not admit how damaging your 'skip outs' have become to the growth of your online business model.  You also may not recognize how low your performance requirements have become.  You may not notice that you may be setting your marks and goals too low.  As a result, you skip the art of developing KEY motivators that help you become more responsible to performing your unwanted 'behind-the-scenes' business duties and requirements.  The earlier post on this blog, "Who is the Villain?", can set you straight if you become confused as to why your business volume is suffering.
Worth Some Reading!

I know we are faced with a world recession but a lot of business models are doing just fine.  Many online business models are performing well.  I suspect the owners of those business models who are doing well have decided to get "into" the demands of performing their responsibilities well.  Somehow when I read about their success I do not get the impression that they take the day off whenever they feel like it.  They have their own alligators working behind the scenes.  If you need proof go check out this link, 2010 Winners Of Online Home-Based Businesses and examine how many online business models have taken their business growth to new heights and success.  While you are there look for little nuggets of ideas that can help your model perform better.  Reading and learning more about success methods is also one of the KEYS to success.  In fact, learning more about success methods is often a KEY left on the counter for most operators.  Many independent operators are too independent.

I think that is enough for now...if any of these suggestion fall off the counter you might be able to find your business keys there also.

Until next time....go open up!
